Dishin’ the Dirt: We Love Frances McDormand but what is an Inclusion Rider?!?!

So, last nights 90th Annual Academy Awards show was interesting to say the least.  There were some highs, like when Host Jimmy Kimmel bogarted a screening of A Wrinkle in Time with a bunch of A List celebs that included Emily Blunt, Gal Gadot, Margot Robbie, Armie Hammer, Ansel Egort, and more...I especially Loved the Hot Dog Gun!!!

Another of my favorite moments came about 3:45 into Kimmel’s  opening monologue when the 2x Oscar host brought up the #MeToo and#TimesUp movements as well #NeverAgain, which as you know was started by our very own #StonemanDouglas Students.  It was most definitely a proud moment plus it was funny when he went on to point out that all the great films that had been nominated this year were probably smashed by Black Panther at the box office over the weekend...he WASN’T lying!

But, the moment I waited for ALL night came when crazy a** Frances McDormand took the stage to accept her Oscar for Best Actress!!!

Now, if you watched the Golden Globes than you will understand why I couldn’t wait to hear her acceptance speech...it’s always a mixed bag of tricks with Frances and last night did not disappoint...

From her Chloe Kim reference...to asking all the FEMALE nominees to stand ...to that borderline manic laugh of hers...you couldn’t help but be sucked all the way in at which point she dropped the “Inclusion Rider” bomb on us and we all immediately grabbed our phones and started google-ing, ‘cuz who in hell knew what an inclusion rider was, right?!?!?

Well, if you’re still at a loss here’s the short of it...

Simply put: It's a stipulation that actors and actresses can ask (or demand) to have inserted into their contracts, which would require a certain level of diversity among a film's cast and crew. ~NPR

Well, Boom and Pow!!!  But, the best part of this is the fact that Frances herself just learned about this “option”...after being in the film industry for 35years!!!  She also dropped some other gems on us backstage after she accepted her award...

And the Oscar for Best Speech after and Acceptance Speech goes to...yup, you guessed it Frances McDormand!!!

Now, we have to see if anyone else is willing to put their money where their mouths are ‘cuz I think its safe to say that #TimesUp on Talk...now we want to see change!!!

Bless,

KimmyB
