In a sitdown with our friends at The New York Times she said, “It definitely hurt my feelings,” adding that her eyes welled up with tears as she watched the performance live at home with her mother. “I wasn’t expecting it, I wasn’t prepared for it,” she continued, adding that “at that point I’d moved on from [the split]. I was just like, ‘What? Why?’ ”
She went on to talk about where or better yet when the divide from the group first began, which was after she worked with Shawn Mendes on I Know what you did last summer, and why she was so passionate about working on her own project. She basically said that after working with Mendes she tried to get more involved with the groups writing process, but was denied the opportunity and she was seeing all these people around her “making music, writing songs and being so free” and she just wanted to do that!

As far as how she feels about her former bandmates now and moving forward she says, “I have to make space for the good stuff to happen in my life. I don’t like holding onto the past, especially when it’s stuff that, in my opinion, is just petty.”
