Biden will speak to lawmakers on April 28. The speech will come 99 days into Biden’s presidency.

In a brief letter to the president, Pelosi asked Biden to “share your vision for addressing the challenges and opportunities of this historic moment.”

“Nearly 100 days ago, when you took the oath of office, you pledged in a spirit of great hope that “Help Is On The Way,” Pelosi wrote in a letter formally inviting Biden to address a joint session. “Now, because of your historic and transformative leadership, Help Is Here!”

“In that spirit, I am writing to invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Wednesday, April 28, to share your vision for addressing the challenges and opportunities of this historic moment,” she added.

Biden’s speech comes later in his first term than any president since Ronald Reagan. The speech is not considered a State of the Union message, which is an address that is required by the Constitution. Presidents do not give that speech until their second term in office.

It is unclear how many legislators and guests will be able to be in the House chamber due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Details on the Capitol’s preparation for the event were not immediately available, according to The Associated Press. Members of the House have been conducting floor votes in small groups so as to avoid having more than 400 members in the chamber at once.
