Fort Lauderdale is cracking down on crime and underage drinking in the popular Himmarshee entertainment district and police have a pretty direct message: You’ve been warned.
The city says it has seen an increase in underage drinking, fights, disorderly conduct and large late-night gatherings in the area. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue is also reporting a jump in calls between midnight and 4 a.m., with many involving people who have passed out.
Now, the city is increasing its presence.
Expect additional police patrols along with K-9 and mounted units, Florida Highway Patrol and federal law enforcement. Officers will also be watching for bars serving underage customers, overcrowding and parties happening in parking lots.
The city already banned open containers and outdoor drinking in entertainment districts earlier this year, and officials are now considering increased fines for alcohol violations and additional requirements for businesses operating late at night.
City leaders also plan to reach out to Broward County schools about the dangers of underage drinking.
Basically, if you’re heading to Himmarshee to party, Fort Lauderdale wants you to know they’re watching a little more closely now.
