If you’ve been ignoring those jury duty summons in Broward County, you might want to rethink that strategy because officials are cracking down on no-shows.
According to Local 10, only 30% to 47% of people summoned for jury duty are actually showing up, creating major delays in the court system.
Circuit Judge Keathan Frink says the shortage is making it difficult to get cases heard, especially civil cases.
Now, Broward County is getting serious about enforcing penalties.
Earlier this month, the court held its first hearing of this kind in nearly 15 years, ordering 100 jury duty no-shows to explain themselves.
And here’s the ironic part. Only 27 responded, and just FOUR actually showed up!
One person received a fine, while three others were given new court dates. Those who ignored the hearing could now be served by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
So if you get a jury duty summons in Broward County, don’t just toss it aside. Ignoring it could end up costing you more than a day off work.
