Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library sends free books to children from birth until age five in participating communities, with a specially selected book delivered every month at no cost to families.

Dolly started the program back in 1995 in her home county in East Tennessee. The inspiration came from her father, who was unable to read or write, and her goal was to help children develop a love of reading as early as possible.

What started as a local program has since spread around the world. The Imagination Library now operates in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland, gifting millions of books every month.

So on Dolly Parton Day, maybe celebrate by checking whether the program is available for a child in your life — or simply sharing it with a parent who might not know about it.
