Florida Cracks Down on Rental Application Fraud Starting October 1!

For Rent Sign in Front of New Home Why rental housing demand continues growing across major markets (Andy Dean Photography/Andy Dean Photography)

If you’re applying for a rental in Florida, there’s a new law you need to know about.

Starting October 1, 2026, using fake documents or someone else’s identity to get approved for a rental and then moving into the property could land you a third degree felony.

That includes things like fake pay stubs, altered bank statements or fake IDs.

The law also gives landlords the ability to end the lease and give the tenant seven days’ notice to leave if this type of fraud is discovered.

And just to be clear, this isn’t about accidentally putting the wrong information on an application. The law targets people who knowingly use fraudulent information to get approved.

Bottom line: if you’re looking for a place in Florida, keep everything on that application legit.
