Women in South Florida will have another opportunity to receive a free mammogram as Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins.

The City of Miami Gardens hosted a free mammogram event Thursday at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, and the response was so big that organizers eventually had to stop accepting walk-ins.

The mobile mammogram unit, or “mammovan,” started seeing women even before its scheduled start time and stayed busy throughout the morning.

The event is sponsored by Miami Gardens Councilwoman Dr. Michelle Powell, who is both a physician and breast cancer survivor. Powell also stressed that getting screened is only the first step. If a mammogram leads to a recommendation for an ultrasound, diagnostic test or other follow-up care, she’s urging women not to put it off.
