Apparently, cruise ships aren’t the only thing you’ll find at PortMiami.

There’s also an entire community of stray cats living across the port’s 500 acres and three islands, and a local program is looking for more volunteers to help take care of them.

Two years ago, PortMiami partnered with Miami-Dade Animal Services on a Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return program, also known as TNVR. Since then, Animal Services has sterilized 146 stray cats living around the port.

The program has 14 volunteers who help trap and feed the cats, but organizers say they need more people, particularly those who already work at or are familiar with PortMiami.

There are now five designated feeding stations around the port, although four are located behind security fences. Volunteers have to apply and become authorized to participate in the feeding program, and they’re also responsible for donating the food.

Last year, Miami-Dade County commissioners also approved lawful feeding of stray animals at the port while prohibiting people from dumping animals there.

So if you’re a cat person and you’re looking for a very Miami way to volunteer, apparently there’s a small army of PortMiami cats waiting for you.

Just know this isn’t a show-up-once-and-pet-some-kittens situation. Organizers say they’re looking for people willing to make a real commitment.
