Shawn Mendes answers all the questions we've wanted to know for like....EVER in Rolling Stone!
Quick tidbits: Our boy LOVES smoking weed and playing guitar for hours, has no game when it comes to girls, and will never say no to a selfie!
But let’s be honest...Two things that the Mendes army and pop culture aficionados have all wondered about Shawn...Whether he’s gay or not and ironically, his relationship with Hailey Baldwin. Quite a shame because the boy is extremely talented, but I won’t be hypocritical and say that it’s not something everyone wants to know.
On Hailey Baldwin (Bieber):
From the looks of things, Shawn had acknowledged that they were more than just friends but refrains from putting a title...Rather, a "zone of limbo" were his exact words but that he doesn't have any bad blood. Just one month later, she's engaged and unfollows him on instagram...He talked about how he handled that:
“I texted Hailey, ‘Congratulations,’ and I really am happy for them. She’s still one of the f*cking coolest people ever — she’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met.” It seems like he might be about to say something more about how it all went down, but he stops himself. “I think I’m an idiot to not, you know. . . . But you can’t control your heart.”
On his sexuality:
"In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I'm not gay," he says. "Even though in my heart I know that it's not a bad thing. There's still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me."
He admits to searching himself constantly on Twitter/Youtube and reading comments from trolls saying his legs were crossed, or his mannerisms were too “feminine”. He tries to restrict himself on doing or saying certain things but he ultimately felt like he had enough and empathized with people still in the closet...
'You f*cking guys are so lucky I'm not actually gay and terrified of coming out,' " he recalls now. "That's something that kills people. That's how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I'm gay?"
In the end, our boy shares that he was raised with 15 female cousins. So that “braiding hair and painting nails” was not something out of his norm while growing up. He even said he’d put glittery eye make up to make his parents laugh from time to time.
"Maybe I am a little more feminine — but that's the way it is. That's why I am me."
That quote above is probably my favorite part of that whole interview! He claims that he will continue to become uninhibited in his music. To read more of his Rolling Stone interview...Check it out here!
