Based in Washington, D.C., electro-pop trio SHAED balance effervescence and atmosphere. Consisting of the soulful, crystalline vocals of onetime solo artist Chelsea Lee and the environments of producers Max and Spencer Ernst, the group's second single, "Thunder," landed on the viral streaming charts in 2016. Behind the Hot 100 Top 20 single "Trampoline," their second EP, Melt, marked their debut on the Billboard 200 in 2019. Featuring collaborations with ZAYN, Lewis Del Mar, and Two Feet, SHAED's first album, High Dive, saw release in 2021, and they made their major-label debut with 2024's "Everybody Knows I'm High."
Chelsea Lee and the Ernst twins first met in high school and began writing music together a few years later. In the meantime, as students at the University of Maryland, Max and Spencer formed the rootsy duo the Walking Sticks, releasing the EP World So Bright in 2012. Lee joined the group soon after, and the resulting follow-up EP, Send the Night, adopted an atmospheric, electronic sound.
Rebranding as SHAED to reflect the change in style, the trio released their debut single, "Just Wanna See," in March 2016. A few months later, they went viral with the anthemic synth tune "Thunder." Both songs were included on their first EP, Just Wanna See, released that September on Photo Finish Records. It was followed by tours in support of Marian Hill and Bishop Briggs. SHAED offered up the stand-alone single "Too Much" in mid-2017, shortly before the group moved in together and worked on recording much of their second EP at home.
In May 2018, the band re-emerged on tour with X Ambassadors, and Photo Finish issued "Trampoline," the lead single from that September's Melt. The song was picked up for a high-profile tech commercial, and the following September, SHAED performed "Trampoline" on TV's Jimmy Kimmel Live! and English pop star ZAYN released a remix of the song. The original single climbed into the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, with Melt cracking the Billboard 200 in October 2019. Three months later, with a big assist from the ZAYN remix of "Trampoline," the album's deluxe edition entered the chart at number 152. A pair of additional tracks, "No Other Way" and "Once Upon a Time," arrived in 2020. In late 2020, SHAED's single "No Other Way" landed on the Billboard alternative airplay chart before appearing on the trio's full-length debut, High Dive, in May 2021. The album included collaborations with Two Feet and Lewis Del Mar as well as the ZAYN edition of "Trampoline." In honor of Pride Month, the "Colorful Campaign" single offered reworked versions of their song "Colorful" a month later. An End of the World remix of another song from High Dive, "Osaka," followed that September.
Chelsea Lee and Spencer Ernst welcomed their first child in January 2022, and in March, SHAED released a cover of Nirvana's "Come as You Are." The group eventually signed with BMG for the release of their first original material in nearly three years, January 2024's "Everybody Knowns I'm High." ~ Marcy Donelson
