A dad is going viral for a heartbreaking reminder to put your phone down and enjoy the moment.
Five years ago, a father named Oliver was celebrating his son’s birthday with cake, presents, and the whole family singing “Happy Birthday.” But when he watched the video afterward, he noticed something that made his heart sink. While his son was smiling with excitement, Oliver was staring at his phone the entire time.
Recently, he shared the video again, saying it reminds him what it looks like to miss a moment you can never get back.
I once posted this video, it went viral, and dozens of guys messaged me and told me it deeply affected them. Every year I watch his face and he’s a little less excited. Today we are celebrating another birthday and so I pulled up the video to remind myself how it looks to be absent from a moment you can’t buy back. I have never been on my phone during a birthday party since this, not even once. I won’t even video it - everyone knows that if they want a video to do it themselves. I hate that I missed this moment but it affected me so deeply and gave me so many future moments that I fiercely protect - a reasonable price to pay, I believe. I hope this can give someone out there perspective and to give them the awareness to put down the phone and live life through your eyes.

The video struck a nerve with parents everywhere, many admitting they’ve done the exact same thing.
According to Pew Research, 68% of American parents say they’re at least sometimes distracted by their phones while spending time with their kids.
Oliver says that since watching the video, he’s never used his phone during another birthday celebration. He even schedules phone-free time with his family.
His message? Your kids won’t stay little forever, and sometimes the best memories happen when you’re not looking at a screen.
